How to Adjust Yoga Poses Online Course

Physical and Verbal Techniques

*Practice live with David or with the recording later at your own convenience.*

By taking this course you’ll gain expertise in adjusting your own poses and your students poses. The focus of the course will be on the Primary Series but the foundation that you’ll gain will easily transfer to poses in Second and Third series. David recommends purchasing the book, Teaching Yoga with Verbal Cues or using the app now available for Iphone and Android.

In this course you’ll learn how to give safe and effective adjustments using a clear method that has the following steps:

1) Determining the ideal or middle position for each pose
2) Assessing when an adjustment is needed based on improving safety as well as being smart, creative, or efficient in working towards the ideal
3) Knowing how to give both the vocal commands and the physical hands on adjustment that will help you or a student move closer to attaining the ideal or middle position of the pose

*Practice live with David or with the recording later at your own convenience.*

During the 4 hour class (with a 30 minute break) you will learn the adjustment method by breaking down poses from each of the main asana categories (Standing, Seated, Marichyasanas, Backbends, Finishing). This work will include:

  • Practicing specific physical adjustments while also identifying the verbal cues that go with them.
  • You’ll learn how to tailor your adjustments by highlighting what has the most value and deserves the highest priority in contrast to what can be conceded.
  • You’ll learn about customizing adjustments to account for limitations and to accommodate a wide range of students (each with their own unique set of circumstances).
  • There will also be inspiring, informative talks that highlight the yoga philosophy behind the adjustment method. The philosophy talks will come from from David’s experience combined with such texts as Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Vashishta, Upanishads, and Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

“An overwhelming fear of public speaking almost stopped me from becoming a yoga teacher. At one point, I attended several teacher trainings and I could never bring myself to volunteer, stand in front of the group, and deliver a few instructions.

I was close to despair. And then, on a whim, I decided to make a set of āsana flashcards. I got index cards, wrote the posture name on one side and the basic verbal commands for doing the pose on the other side. I quizzed myself and spoke the commands out loud as though delivering instructions to students in a class. And this odd little device gave me surprisingly effective results. I grew confident in my knowledge of yoga and eventually summoned courage to share with others.

These verbal cues are a lot like the original ones I created but also represent a crystallization of nearly 30 years of passionate teaching. I hope you find them easy to use, technically precise, and poetically inspiring! May you learn to articulate the verbal cues, use them to teach your students how to strike the immovable spot in each pose, and know the great āsana technology that helps each yogī realize their intrinsic essence as a spiritual Seer.” – David Garrigues
