FULL WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Mysore Class

Mysore class provides the student with a concentrated and heightened learning experience that will help he/she develop practical and technical yoga skills and be immersed in the inspirational magic and poetic soul of the practice. Each student will receive valuable one to one guidance from David on developing his/her personal practice.  The student will develop skill in applying the practice techniques in ways that are logical, challenging, intelligent and fun. David focuses on learning how to follow the Ashtanga system and at the same time creating a practice that honors individuality, versatility and creativity.

Breath, Bandhas, and Pranayama

The breath and bandha classes will include the basic elements for establishing a more breath centered practice including learning to refine ujjayi (victorious breath), and practicing such techniques as viloma (interrupting the breath), and khumbhaka (retaining the breath). You'll also be introduced to the Ashtanga yoga pranayama sequence taught to David by Sri K Pattabhis Jois.

The Allies of Practice Through Surya Namaskara

In this class we’ll look at the root techniques or allies that form the internal practice of Ashtanga Yoga by carefully studying their application to the nine positions of Surya Namaskara. Some of the allies include conscious breathing, central axis, skeletal foundation, and opposing forces. The positions of Surya Namaskara provide the perfect foundational basis for exploring the important role that each of the allies plays in creating a mature, sustainable yoga practice. We’ll also explore how to internally connect the allies, and see how the creative interaction between them can help you to awaken the entire inner ‘field’ of consciousness. Awakening the inner field gives you a special kind of intuitive intelligence that pervades the body and helps you better use limbs 3 and 4 to move towards mastery of all eight limbs in the system.

Yoga Sutras Study

The intellectual study of yoga is an essential means of ensuring progress and maturity through practice. To be exposed to yoga theory is an important part of using of mind to enter into inward directed states of concentration and meditative awareness. This is the part of the intensive where you begin to learn how to apply the philosophical/theoretical basis of yoga to your practice. You begin to see how the theory and the practice are not separate, but rather are two aspects of the same applied, practical study. Meditating on the theoretical teachings helps bring you into more intelligent, accurate and subtle alignment.

Seated Postures and Dynamic Transitions of the Primary Series

In this class we'll explore the core asanas of primary series, learning how to better utilize the 5 allies to help you strategize your efforts. Structuring each seated asana in the primary around understanding the allies (vinyasa, breathing, bandhas etc) will help you better extract the strengthening, restorative, and healing benefits of this important series. We'll also study the dynamic transitions between the asanas, carefully looking at how to create a better a jump back and jump through. Developing these transitions breaks up the monotony of the repetition by giving you a thrill with each dynamic jump. Emphasizing the transitions also teaches you to cultivate rhythm, breath, dynamism and vitality within the stillness of each asana.
