Mysore Intensive in Bali: A Deep Dive into Your Ashtanga Practice and Personal Resilience

This January, join me for a non-residential Mysore Intensive in Bali, where you’ll have the chance to dive deeply into your Ashtanga practice, not just as a form of physical exercise but as a tool for profound self-discovery and personal growth. In this retreat, we’ll explore the full spectrum of yoga—asana, pranayama, meditation, and philosophy—with the aim of meeting our challenges head-on.

By immersing yourself in the tradition of Ashtanga yoga, drawing upon the essential teachings of the past while finding new, empowering ways of seeing the practice, you’ll leave with a deeper connection to yourself, your practice, and the tools needed to rejuvenate and grow far beyond what you might have thought was possible. In a supportive community and surrounded by the beauty of Bali, this is your time to reset, renew, and rise to the challenges of life with newfound clarity and courage.

About Canggu

Canggu is a village on the south coast of the Indonesian island of Bali. It's surrounded by terraced rice paddies and known for beaches like Canggu and Echo, with strong surf. The village boasts a relaxed, bohemian atmosphere, an ideal haven for those seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of Bali’s more tourist-centric areas. North of Canggu, Tanah Lot is a Hindu temple that sits just offshore on a rocky outcrop.  Canggu’s strategic location makes it an ideal base for taking day trips to nearby areas. One of Bali’s most stunning natural attractions, the rice field terraces, can be found in the countryside.

Accommodation options are wide-ranging, with everything from simple beach hostels to exquisite luxury resorts, fit for a whole host of tastes and budgets.

Traveling to Canggu

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL

Flying to Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport (also known as Denpasar Airport) is the most convenient way to reach Canggu. The airport is located approximately 40 minutes to an hour’s drive away from Canggu, depending on traffic conditions. Taxis and private drivers are readily available for hire at the airport.

For travellers from Europe, consider airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, or KLM for flights to Bali. These airlines offer connecting flights with layovers in Dubai, Doha, Singapore, or Amsterdam, respectively.

For those flying from the USA, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, or Singapore Airlines are recommended. These carriers provide connecting flights with stopovers in Hong Kong, Seoul, or Singapore.

Direct flights to Bali from major Australian cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane are available with airlines such as Jetstar, Qantas, and Virgin Australia. These flights offer a convenient option for travellers from Australia.

TOURIST VISA

All students need to apply for a short individual tourist/visit visa.  The purpose of your trip is tourism. Apply here

From Airport to Canggu

As there’s no public transfer option, the only way to get from Denpasar Airport (also known as Ngurah Rai International Airport) to Canggu is to take an airport taxi.  It's possible to pre-book the taxi but it's not necessary. The journey time will be around 40 minutes, depending on traffic, and the cost will be approximately €20 (IDR 310,000).

Class Descriptions

Mysore Class

Mysore class provides students with a concentrated learning experience that will help them develop practical and technical skills in the discipline of Ashtanga yoga as well as be immersed in the inspirational magic and poetic soul of the practice. Each student will receive valuable one to one guidance from David on developing their personal practice.

Breath, Bandhas, and Pranayama

Participants will gain knowledge of pranayama, the fourth yogic limb, and lay a foundation for establishing a personal breathing practice. The classes will include developing ujjayi (victorious breath), viloma (interrupting the breath), khumbhaka (retaining the breath), and learning the traditional Ashtanga pranayama sequence as taught by Sri K Pattabhi Jois. These sessions will also help the student breathe with more skill and awareness in their asana practice.

Asana Theory

These are clinic style led classes that investigate specific aspects of the practice in varying levels of detail. These important classes feature more verbal instruction; they give students a chance to slow things down, see new ways to orient during practice, get explanations of elusive and often unspoken aspects of the practice, and understand the Ashtanga method in greater, more subtle detail.

Yoga Sutras Study

These classes will focus on studying the meaning of the yoga sutras and lead to a lecture that aims to clarify the meaning of the texts and their context within daily practice. David will also draw from other sacred texts like the Bhagavad Gita, bhakti poetry, and Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

Led Primary Series
