IMAGERY IN ASHTANGA YOGA

We'll meditate on and explore important stories, images and themes from the tantra's, hatha yoga pradipika and other sacred texts.  Images such as awakening kundalini, imagining the body's vast network of nadis, aligning your asanas along the glorious central axis and along the string of internal lotus wheels.  Using such images to create internalized meditative awareness is the purpose of the secret teachings of bandhas, mudras, asanas and pranayama.  They show you how to effectively position your self mentally and physically in your postures, and how to awaken your entire inner field to behold yoga's spectacular view.

EXTRACT STRENGTH THROUGH STANDING POSTURES

In this class we’ll explore how the cultivating a combination of dynamism and stability in the standing postures provides you a perfect means of entrance into the internal practice of Ashtanga Yoga. We’ll explore the importance of using the feet, legs, and hips to create strength, stamina and concentration. Better understand how the standing postures are an essential key to building a strong asana foundation. Learn to better access to mula and uddhyana bandhas (locks), see how the grounded support of the lower body can awaken the breath and the spine and lead the way to steady gazing (dristi) and to dynamic meditation (dhyana).

MEDITATING UPSIDE DOWN

Inversions are some of the most valuable, satisfying, and yet little understood or utilized postures in the ashtanga sequences. Commonly there is unnecessary fear when performing these foundational asanas. You can overcome fears and enjoy the benefits of inversions when you expand your thinking about what they are and how to do them. We'll study inversions from the Primary Series like Downdog, Shoulderstand, and Headstand. You'll be able to apply the teachings from this class and be able to work longer with more focus and clarity in your inversions.

WISDOM THROUGH DYNAMISM

Ashtanga yoga is a form of dynamic meditation, a combination of awakened, grounded movement and concentrated, agile immovability.  There is a connection between using your palate, your fine sense of discernment also known as buddhi, or intellect, and becoming skilled in executing the dynamic aspects of the ashtanga practice.  These aspects call for the use of sharp mental clarity, sudden readiness, ability to judiciously apply speed, power, and energetic vitality to your movements in transitions and when performing actions in the postures.  We'll explore transitions that involve jumping, rolling, swinging, and floating, and how the vinyasa movements invite you to use your spine dynamically in order to engage your full attention in your postures.  We'll also study how to develop and refine your jump back and through using the super dynamic 'crouch and spring' method.

BUDDHI IN BACKBENDS

Back bends are the most challenging, thrilling and inspiring aspects of yoga practice, they teach you when you understand how to align your self and to create proper form.   The key to properly set up and anchor the legs and arms in order extend your spine dynamically and safely.  We'll explore intensity, rhythm, principles, and stamina through working with a variety of backbends from 1st to 3rd series--lots of tapas and full power shakti!
