Philadelphia Mysore Intensive

A Mysore intensive provides the student with a concentrated and heightened learning experience that will help he/she develop practical and technical yoga skills and be immersed in the inspirational magic and poetic soul of the practice. The student will develop skill in applying the practice techniques in ways that are logical, challenging, intelligent and fun.

One focus will be on exploring learning how to follow the system at the same time as creating a practice that honors individuality, versatility and creativity. Each student will receive valuable one to one guidance from David on developing his/her personal practice. In addition to the Mysore sessions, there will be pranayama (one day per week), chanting and discussion of Yoga Sutra’s (one day per week) as well as other classes that focus on asana and pranayama theory, yoga philosophy, devotional poetry and teaching stories from sacred texts. WORKSHOP PROGRAM

MYSORE CLASS

Mysore class provides the student with a concentrated and heightened learning experience that will help he/she develop practical and technical yoga skills and be immersed in the inspirational magic and poetic soul of the practice. Each student will receive valuable one to one guidance from David on developing his/her personal practice. The student will develop skill in applying the practice techniques in ways that are logical, challenging, intelligent and fun. David focuses on learning how to follow the Ashtanga system and at the same time creating a practice that honors individuality, versatility and creativity.

PRANAYAMA

The pranayama classes will include the basic elements for establishing a more breath centered practice including learning to refine ujjayi (victorious breath), and practicing such techniques as viloma (interrupting the breath), and khumbhaka (retaining the breath). You'll introduced to the ashtanga yoga pranayama sequence.

ASHTANGA’S DYNAMIC VINYASA DIMENSION THROUGH SURYA NAMASKARA

This asana class will focus on how proper vinyasa knowledge extends beyond memorizing the number of positions of the asana; you are also meant to know the vinyasa positions dynamically within your body. There is a great art to understanding the subtle progressions of movement that bring you into and out of each asana, exploring this refinement is what brings you into readiness, poise, beauty and alignment in your postures. We'll look at how such vinyasa knowledge helps you understand how to refine your awareness and to learn to see the practice as chiefly dhyana, meditation.

HATHA YOGA MEDITATION AND YOGA SUTRAS TALK

Our daily practice consists of performing a great variety of postures and linking them together with active, rhythmic transitions. We synchronize our movements with our breathing and use bandhas to direct energy along the middle axis of our bodies. By applying this dynamic combination of techniques we seek to create internal absorption through a steady flow of movement and posture that doesn’t let up from start to finish. But we might get so caught up in the movement and dynamism of the hatha techniques that we fail to seek out or properly value the stillness that is the goal of every single yoga technique. In this class we’ll use concepts from the yoga sutras and creative thinking about hatha yoga techniques, to explore different ways to achieve stillness amidst the dynamism and action of our daily practice.

LEARNING HIP INTELLIGENCE THROUGH SEATED POSTURES

In this class we’ll focus on creative, safe, and absorbing approaches to gaining flexibility in the hip joints in seated postures. We’ll contemplate the integrated thinking process that joins together the action in the hip joint in common movements such as taking Padmasana (Lotus Pose) and the transfer of energy through the leg from the hip to the foot—and also the role that the spine plays in using the hips and legs skillfully to build a pose. We’ll be looking for ideas on how to safely reclaim and to discover the natural range of motion of the hip joints and thereby avoid straining the knee or ankle joints.
