Ways to study with David
Ashtanga Yoga School of Philadelphia
David is the director of the Ashtanga Yoga School of Philadelphia. When he is not traveling he teaches daily Mysore classes. Studying with David daily is the most potent way to learn from him. (click here)
In his workshops David offers a combination both traditional counted vinyasa led classes and clinic style led classes that investigate specific aspects of the practice in varying levels of detail. These important classes feature more verbal instruction; they give students a chance to slow things down, see new ways to orient during practice, get explanations of elusive, often unspoken aspects of the practice, and understand the Ashtanga method in greater, more subtle detail. Mysore, chanting and kirtan classes are also frequently included in a workshop. During the weekend David weaves together studies of asana, pranayama, bandha's, vinyasa, chanting, bhakti yoga, yoga sutra's and other elements to help develop Ashtanga Vidya (knowledge).
David has three Mysore Intensives each year. Kovalam, India (click here), Breitenbush Hot Springs (click here), and on the Outerbanks, North Carolina (click here). The core of a Mysore intensive is for students to develop their practice through receiving individualized instruction from David in focused Mysore style classes. These sessions are supplemented with additional instructed classes that focus on asana and pranayama theory, yoga philosophy, and fun, inspiring, teaching stories from sacred indian texts. Mysore intensives are also for students to get away to an inspiring, beautiful location and to enjoy a restful and rejuvenating vacation or retreat. Following each day's Mysore session there will be a 1-2.5 hour class that offers a combination of chanting, pranayama, asana theory, adjustment knowledge, lecture and discussion. On the weekends there can also be further in-depth workshop classes on topics that are relevant to the practice. The duration of Mysore intensives can be as few as three days or as long as five weeks (as in India).
David's In-depth Studies last from one week to eleven days. They are all day and are centered around four main themes:
1) Mysore Class
2) Asana study and Theory
4) Chanting and study of sacred texts (including Yoga sutra's, Shiva Samhita, Bhagavad Gita, and stories from Hindu mythology)
David's Primary Series in-depth study will be October 17th-22nd, 2013 in Philadelphia and his European In-depth study will be in Frankfurt, Germany November 16th-22nd at the Private Yoga Institute. (click here)
